November 2018 Newsletter
Coming Meeting: Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at 7:00 PM at the Papio-Missouri NRD Bldg., ChalcoHills Recreation Area Enter at 156th and Giles Rd.
Following Meeting: December 18, 2018.
Program: “Wood Sealers”.
Presidents Notes: The waterfowl season is underway! Surely, these colder temps will bring the birds to us in great numbers.
At the October meeting Barry Kinney brought us a once-in-a-lifetime program on Jack Musgrove and his working decoys. Many of us did not know the influence Jack had on our art form. A special thanks goes out to Cliff Hollestelle for arranging for Barry to come to our meeting and hosting his stay in Lincoln. Of course many thanks should go to Barry for taking the time to come to our meeting with Jack’s birds. Al Thomas (AKA, The Collector) has an article on Jack Musgrove which was published in the Iowa Conservationist in 1955. This is a good read on the early days of mid-west contemporary decoy carving.
We have changed the format for the mini decoy contest for 2019. Read on for more details.
I want to remind our membership that the January meeting is nearing quickly. This is the meeting at which we elect our new officers for 2019 and time to pay 2019 membership dues. If you have an interest in serving in a club office contact me. Hope to see you at the meeting.
Paul Satore attended the October meeting. Paul is a collector of vintage decoys. We need more serious collectors. Welcome Paul!
Welcome members and visitors.

Suggestions for short programs.
At the October meeting…
The mini decoy contest, which has been held during the annual club picnic, was discussed. It was moved and seconded that we move the contest to the September meeting, and the subject matter will be miniature replicas of vintage decoys. The motion carried without further discussion.
The date change was made to give more time to carvers who participate in the spring carving competitions. The change to a new subject matter was made to celebrate the old decoys and the influence on the art form, and bring more entries to the contest.
We will need to rewrite and approve the contest guidelines in the coming months.
2020 club calendar…Ron Pigg has seen the software for the 2020 calendar, and he is ready to start working on the next edition. It was decided to honor Ralph Stutheit in the 2020 edition. If you plan to have a carving featured in this edition, you should begin to select your subject. We will begin the photography in the spring.
The Musgrove decoy program was a big hit! We invite Barry Kinney in the future to a meeting on these important decoys.
Short programs…. We are still in need of subjects for short programs to be presented at the meeting.
