October 2017 Newsletter
Coming Meeting: Tuesday, October 17, 2017at the 4H Center.
Following meeting: November 14, 2017.
Program: Eye Setting: The “Ins and Outs.”
President’s Notes: Wow! The time is flying! We are well into the early fall waterfowl season. Fall is definitely in the air. The time has come to put away the summer gear and activities and think about starting our winter carving projects.
I hope the change in meeting place and the date is not creating an inconvenience for anyone. This is the price of progress. Next month, we will return to our usual second Tuesday-of-the-month schedule. You get to the center by entering the well marked drive to the west of the Aquarium drive. Follow the drive up the hill to the 4H Center.
At the last meeting we had the chance to see the finished 2018 CFDCC calendars. I for one, am impressed! Kudos to Ron Pigg for doing all the detail work. We discussed some ideas for future calendar(s) and will put the subject on the agenda for more discussion. We are sending a few gift calendars to special friends of the club to include Jim Druliner, Curt Fabre, and Nancy Martin to mention a few.
The species for the 2018 mini decoy contest and trade was announced. Read on for more details.
Thanks to Norm for the program on habitat design and construction. Great discussion. We took suggestions from the members in attendance on future short programs. I feel one of the functions of our club is to share knowledge on the finer points of our art form. Contact me if you have ideas for programs.
Thanks to the members who brought their latest work to the meeting. These are always a good source for discussion.
See you at the meeting,
Welcome members and visitors

Suggestions for short programs
Other business: 2018 mini decoy species list.
Calendars are here! At the last meeting, we started the distribution of the calendar orders. We will bring calendars to the meeting for those of you who could not make it to the September meeting. If you have your order and want more, we have ordered extra just in case. The cost is $5.00 per calendar.
Club Caps. If you want a club cap, we have a few left at $11 each. This is a high quality cap with the club logo. Let Norm know if you want one.
2018 Mini Decoy Contest: The species selected are pied-bill grebe, bufflehead, lesser scaup, and the common loon. We will put the contest on the agenda in the near future to discuss the details.
Meeting programs: As mentioned earlier, we talked about subjects for future short programs to be given at our regular meetings. Here are a few ideas:
*Eye placement and finish.
*Sealing for paint application.
*Keeling and balancing methods for floating
*Drawing your own plans.
If you have other suggestions, please speak up!
Show and Competition News: You may have heard by now that the Louisiana show scheduled for October 4th and 5th was cancelled due to the hurricane. We hope the show can continue to be one of the finest wildfowl carving events in the country. Curt says they’re high and dry.
