April 2022 Newsletter
COMING MEETING: Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at 7:00 PM.
Location: Schramm Education Center (SEC).
Following meeting: May 10, 2022.
Program: Surprise!!
PRESIDENTS NOTES: Spring is here along with the spring waterfowl migration. We have even spotted a few summer residents like the eastern bluebird. There are lots of opportunities to get out with your binoculars and enjoy the color and behavior first hand.
The spring competition has also begun with the Ohio Decoy Collection and Carving Show and the Louisiana Wildfowl Collectors and Carvers Guild show. At this time, we have little information on the results for each show. If you know how the shows went and how our members fared, give us a shout.
At the last meeting, we agreed to hold the mini decoy show during the September meeting during the annual member and family picnic. At the upcoming meetings we will discuss the particulars.
The Beginners’ Decoy Carving Seminar was held at the Schramm Education Center on March 20th. More than 20 participants signed up, however just 14 attended. We think the weather was so mild, a few decided to enjoy the great weather. We have received a few evaluations with positive comments which we will review at the meting.
I want to give a special shout to our instructors Don Gabelhouse, Al Thomas, Lon Bernth, and Norm Wise for instructing at the seminar and to Kelly Ekue and the staff at Schramm Education Center for their support.
You have already noticed our short program for this meeting is a surprise. I know you will enjoy what we have lined up for you. Join us.
A special thanks goes to Dick Zechmann for his informative program on scrimshaw art.
See ya at the meeting on April 12.

At the last meting…
2023 Club Calendar: Ron Pigg updated us on the progress of the new calendar. To date, we have most of the photos needed. We photographed 5 carvings at the March meeting. Ron and Norm will plan a trip to Lincoln to photograph a few more carvings. Norm can take photos at his home if necessary.
We should be able to send the final edits to the printer by the May meeting or early in the summer.
If you have not seen the latest edition of your page, contact Ron at [email protected] .
Schramm Serenity Garden Project: The staff at SEC have asked us to use our carving skills to make a totem for the garden. After discussion, we decided to meet with Kelly to discuss the specific requirements and how the Club will be involved. Norm and Al will update the membership at the upcoming meeting.
Display Case update: We have been told a display case has been ordered. It is a wall mounted unit that will be used to display club carvings and items of interest at the SEC. After it is installed, we will get more details on how it will be used.
Beginners’ Decoy Carving Seminar: The seminar was well attended given the great weather that may have kept some participants away for outdoor activities. Fourteen participants attended the 4 hour program on an introduction to wildfowl carving.
To date we have received a few participant evaluations which seem to give us good marks for content and organization. A few felt some of the program was too long. We will attempt to get more feedback before the next meeting. Most liked the hands-on woodburning activity.
We will put the program on the agenda for discussion and future planning.
A special thanks to the instructors and members who loaned wood burners for the course.
