October 2022 Newsletter
COMING MEETING: Tuesday, October 13, 2022 at 7:00 PM
Location: Schramm Education Center (SEC).
Following meeting: November 8, 2022.
President’s notes: Well, we pulled off another successful family picnic and social meeting. I had a great time and I hope you did as well. There are several people we are beholding to for getting this event organized. I especially want to thank the members who donated items for the drawing. It appears that almost everyone took away an item of interest.
We had the occasion to recognize two members of out club for their service. First, we inducted Brick Paulson into our Hall of Fame. In addition to being a charter member, Brick is a knowledgable decoy collector and an excellent carver to boot. Congrats Brick!
Our second inductee to the Hall of Fame is Jim Fliger. Like Brick, Jim went above and beyond the rest of us with his exceptional art and his contributions to the art form. His family has reached out to us with their gratitude for this honor.
We will update our website page with their pictures and brief bios in the near future.
The Club took this opportunity to recognize Ron Pigg for his tireless work on the Club calendars. Ron has led the charge on the production and distribution for 5 consecutive years of our calendar. We gifted Ron with an autographed Hollestelle woodie decoy. Thanks Ron.
The mini decoy contest had six entries in the open class and 5 in the Hall of Fame class. We will list the winners in the Competition and Show section of this newsletter. Thanks to the members who took the time to create an entry and show us what can be accomplished with a little block of wood, some paint and a little time. We also need to thank Bill Browne, Al Thomas and, Brick Paulson for serving as judges and our members in attendance for selecting the Peoples Choice carving.
Our coming meeting promises to be an interesting event. I want to encourage as many as possible to join in the discussions. Check out the agenda below.
I want to ask for the help of anyone with some technology skills to assist us to update our website. If you have an interest, contact me or Norm. We have some ideas which need to be explored to improve the site in service of this club.
We have been informed that Marion Maas has been under the weather lately. We wish her God’s speed and a rapid, complete recovery.
Norm is ready to mail out the complementary calendars to our supporters. We will have the list at the meeting for your review and additions. By the way, we have a few extra calendars available if you need more. Call Norm at (402) 320-2947 or reply to this newsletter email.
Hopefully the Schramm Serenity Garden is completed enough for us to have look at our contributions.
These newsletters are our only historical record of what we do as we do not keep formal records or meeting minutes. Please help us to keep this record relevant and current by suggesting additions and edits.
One final comment and request. We seem to be a bit short on photos of the picnic event. If you have pictures, cell phone or otherwise, please send them to us at your convenience. We want to add these photos to our history volumes. See ya at the meeting.
Ron C.

We understand a member of the Nebraska Game and Parks administration will join us at the meeting to discuss the display case.. Several questions arise about how to use and manage the case that need to be answered before the case is purchased. We have added the questions we will be discussing on the last pages of this newsletter. Don Gabelhouse is coordinating this project. Join us for the discussion and details.

Display case discussion questions:
. Size and orientation (vertical or horizontal) of the display case
(recommend that the display case accommodate at least a dozen
carvings, as described below).
- Responsibilities of NGPC staff (recommend they only need to keep the glass clean)
- Signage (recommend two separate placards—one with a short history of bird carving and one with a history of the CFDCC and its activities sit on or in the case)
- Contents (recommend the display includes at least one of each of the following: a working duck decoy; a floating decorative duck; a smoothie duck; a smoothie shorebird; a decorative songbird; a miniature upland gamebird; a miniature duck/goose, perhaps the club contest winners; a champagne bird; a palm frond bird; an individual feather; and a fish).
works for one year and that the display be rotated annually)
- Carver advertisement (recommend that the club avoid appearances that the display is a for-profit effort and that each carving has only a small card with a description of the carving and the carver’s name, email address and phone number)
- Premature removal of carvings on display (recommend that a carving that is sold or otherwise needs to be removed before the end of the one-year cycle be replaced with another similar carving from the carver who created it, and if he/she doesn’t have a replacement then we would seek one from other club members)
- Display coordinator (recommend that one club member serve as a contact to answer NGPC questions, deal with problems, select and rotate carvings and remove carvings if needed).
- We will add the discussion of the display case to the November meeting agenda.
