December 2022 Newsletter
COMING MEETING: Tuesday, December 13, 2022 At 7:00 PM.
Location: Schramm Park Education Center (SEC).
Following Meeting: January 10, 2023.
President’s notes: I want to take this opportunity to wish each and every member a joyful holiday season. In celebration of the season, we will take some time during this meeting to enjoy some fellowship, refreshments and holiday food. Please join us.
This past year has been a productive and meaningful time for our club. In addition to welcoming two new members to our Hall of Fame and we recognized the contributions of our members to the history and mission of our club. It is my goal to keep the club alive and making it a significant contributor to our art form. It should go without saying this goal can’t be met without your help and participation.
In January, we will elect new officers. Nominations are now open for consideration.
We will give you an update on the serenity garden and the display case projects at this meeting. We hope you can come and join in the discussions. We will include a few pictures of the serenity garden at the end of this newsletter. Thanks to our members who offered their artistry for this project.
We are about to start the process of publishing the next edition of the calendar. Ron Pigg has volunteered to do the computer work and Norm will snap the photos. We have discussed the featured artists for this edition. There will be more later in this newsletter and more discussion at the meeting.
We are still planning on updating (refreshing) the website and possibly the newsletter. If you have suggestions or comments, please contact us… or come to the meeting to be part of the discussions. As always, the goal of the newsletter and our website is to promote the mission, the services of the club, and the work of individual members. I have asked Jim Layman and Norm Wise to spearhead this project after the new year.
I have noted that the Ward World Wildfowl Carving Championships is on the in-person schedule for 2023. Likewise the Ohio show is also scheduled to be held in 2023.
In my opinion, we need to keep these events going to keep this art form alive. We hope you plan to attend or otherwise support them if you can’t go.
’Tis the season for giving. I’m sure you have been inundated with requests from charitable organizations as I have this past month or so. I plan to support some of the waterfowl and wildlife organizations. I encourage you to do the same to the extent you are able.
Speaking of giving, we have a secret benefactor since the last meeting. This benefactor has requested to remain anonymous. We are very grateful for this generosity. A letter has been sent acknowledging the gift which will make the display case financially possible.
We hope to see you at the last meeting of 2022 on the 13th for some fellowship and holiday cheer.

At the last meeting…
Calendar Project update. Ron Pigg updated us on the 2024 calendar. The early drafts will be started in January and we will begin to get photos in February. To date, we have 11 members committed to the next edition. If you want to be included and did not get your name on the list, let us know as soon as practical.
We discussed featured carvers of the next edition. The names suggested were Ray Richmond and Lonnie Bernth. It was also proposed that we feature one in each version of the calendar. A final decision must be made soon so let us know your feelings on this.
We have been in contact with Ray’s family. They are thrilled to have him recognized and will be sending us some photos of his work.
Ray has been admitted to a care facility in Wahoo. His son Matt, reports he is physically well, but sadly his memory is fading.
Ron will update us on the plan for new editions at the meeting. By the way, we have a few unsold 2023 calendars in each version. Let Norm know if you want more.
Library additions: Norm reported that we have not added new carving materials to our library for a few years. Pat Godin has added a dozen new instructional CDs to his portfolio. If you would like the Club to purchase any of these for our library, let us know. It has been suggested we purchase one new CD each month for the next year. The cost is $35.00 each.
Display. Case…We had a brief update to the display case project and hope Jeff Fields can provide more info at this meeting.
Serenity Garden… The serenity Garden is almost complete. The totem posts have been installed along with some stone benches and plantings. If you can get out to the garden before sunset, you will find it east of the Schramm Educational Center along the north side of the park road. Please take the time to give the Park staff kudos on a great design and installation. Our contributions are on display. Thanks to all who made a contribution of a carved cedar block.
Tom Paskach reported on the MAWA fall show. Four Club members manned our table, displayed carvings and promoted the club to the attendees with our brochure.
Upcoming course… Norm Wise will teach a mini decoy course to novice and intermediate carvers in early February. It will be held at Mahoney State Park. The cost is approximately $300 for the 4 days. This includes a pattern, wood cutout, class fee and, noon meals. Contact Norm for an application and more details.
Annual membership drive… January is the month renew our membership to the club. You can pay $25 at the meeting or send your check to Norm Wise.
Other News…
We have no competition news to report. Dates and times will be in the next newsletter.
New Tom Christie Youtube videos…Tom is publishing a new series of YouTube videos on decoy carving. He is doing this to promote wildfowl carving to the general public. These are free if you have access to the Youtube channel. The web address is: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbfFDxkmclYF8IJSRr9AgsA/videos.
Give Tom your feedback and appreciation for his work to preserve our art form.
